I eagerly opened my acupuncture general practice in the fall of 2010, soon after graduation.
In my first year of business, I treated lots of medical conditions, but the significant majority were coming in for pain. It was a blessing for me, because I loved helping people get stronger, regain range of motion, and get back to doing the stuff they love.
Being in the alternative healthcare field, most of my clients were looking for a drug-free solution for their particular pain, whether it was accident-related, general overuse, sports-related, or from surgery complications. No matter the pain source, I was interested in finding a solution.
As I saw patterns evolve, I formed a pain management protocol and treatments had a 3-pronged approach: acupuncture, soft tissue manipulation, and application of a topical analgesic to help promote healing by reducing inflammation and improving circulation.
This is where my interest in topicals began.
I used a wide array of over-the-counter topical pain relievers on my patients. The clinic was where I examined what products were helpful and which were most effective. I spent tons of my own money on OTC relievers and I took notes on everything that touched my fingers. Though I was seeing some good results, some of the products I was using had some awful ingredients.
I wondered why so many of these products used artificial scents and fillers. It made no sense to me why some of these brands cut so many corners.
That was when I began to feel that I could not be a true advocate of health & wellness if I were slathering petroleum, propylene glycol, and other such garbage on my patients.
I knew there had to be something else. Something cleaner. Something healthier. Something better.
But with all my research, I found that there wasn't.
I wanted a higher quality topical pain reliever for my clientele and if I couldn't buy it, I would make it.
Fortunately, I was armed with a good deal of knowledge in herbal medicinals. I had spent the last 4 years studying plants and their properties. It would come in handy as I referenced clinical texts based on historical Chinese trauma medicine.
The first balm I made sat in my office for a few months "curing" and maybe also hiding. It was definitely an experiment, so I was pretty hush hush on the batch and test group size. My engineering background helped me organize a proper testing and development plan for the product evolution. Improvements were made batch after batch, with tweaks to concentrations, ingredients, and preparation over time.
Once I felt that Battle Balm was superior to the standard topicals in my clinic, I replaced them all.
My mom, who suffers from chronic pain, was a big part of the early Battle Balm product testing and when I finally hit on something great, she called and gave me an earful!
I quickly found out that making a great product and selling it are two different animals.
As I navigate the world of marketing and advertising, I continue to learn how to effectively spread the word about Battle Balm. I feel that we all deserve better designed healthcare products and I won't stop until Battle Balm is a household name.
